Key Terms & Definitions:

  1. Tariqa: A spiritual path or method in Sufism that leads to divine realization.
  2. Shaykh: A spiritual guide or teacher in Sufism who has traversed the path and can guide others.
  3. Bay'at: A pledge of allegiance to a spiritual guide, creating a bond between the guide and the disciple.
  4. Muraqabah: Spiritual contemplation and connection with the Divine.
  5. Tafakkur: Contemplation or reflection, especially on spiritual realities.
  6. Nafs: The ego or lower self, which often acts as an obstacle to spiritual growth.
  7. Khidmat: Service to others done out of love and devotion, a key aspect of the path.
  8. Hosh Dar Dam: The Naqshbandi principle of being conscious of the breath.
  9. Nazar Bar Qadam: The Naqshbandi principle of watching one’s step, focusing on the heart and the path.
  10. Safar Dar Watan: The Naqshbandi principle that the journey is inward, and to focus on oneself rather than the world.
  11. Golden Chain: The spiritual lineage of masters who transmit divine knowledge and energy.
  12. Madad: Spiritual support from a shaykh or from the Divine.
  13. Faiz: Downpouring blessings, grace, or spiritual energy from the Divine.
  14. Ahlul Bayt: The family of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who are revered for their spiritual knowledge.
  15. Ulil amre: Those who have authority from God and the Prophet, and who are tasked with guiding others.
